Balenciaga Sweaters

In order to help his mother who worked as a seamstress, Cristóbal Balenciaga learned how to sew and cut patterns when he was just 11 years old. In 1919, when he opened his first boutique in San Sebastian, Spain, Balenciaga already had 20 years of experience. Over time, he became known for challenging what was considered in fashion. In the ‘50s, he designed the first sack (or, as we call it today, baby doll) dress. Adding volume around the waist and creating a curve-free effect, it directly rivaled Dior’s ‘New Look.’ Revered by many of his fellow designers, Coco Chanel referred to him as “the master of us all.”
